So this is a topic that I feel like comes up every single year at this time. Is Die Hard a Christmas film? I’m not even sure how this is even a debate. Die Hard is a 100% Christmas movie and here’s why.

  1. It’s set on freaking Christmas! The movie starts as our hero John McLane goes to visit his ex-wife on Christmas Eve at her company’s Christmas Party! The movie takes place during Christmas.
  2. After Hans and his men take over the Nakatomi building and John’s going all bad ass, he kills one of the henchmen and writes on their shirt “Now I have a machine gun ho ho ho.” Ummm…hello! This has Christmas written all over it!

3. John’s wife is named Holly.

4. The end credits: You can watch below and listen to the song yourself. Hint, it’s not a normal song you’d hear in Los Angeles.

5. Other Christmas songs are played in the movie including “Winter Wonderland” and “Christmas in Hollis”.

6. Now some will say “Harry, this movie will work if it’s not on Christmas.” That is where I disagree with you. Hans (Alan Rickman will always be Snape first to me, but he’s a damn good Hans) needed everyone in one central location to perfectly execute the hostage situation. He couldn’t have everyone all scattered around. He needed the Christmas party!

Do I need to keep going? Die Hard is the PERFECT Christmas movie! You can sit down on the couch drinking egg nog or hot chocolate and watch this movie over and over and over again. Seeing John McLane kick ass never gets old.
